Shipowner: "Scrap cabotage policy? No, no, no.."

Guong
Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia Shipowners Association (Masa) said it will resist any attempts to remove the cabotage policy, claiming that scrapping it could cause huge collateral damage to the Malaysian shipping industry and undermine national interests. DE
Huge collateral damage? Wow, I didn't know that the trade route between the peninsula and Sabah & Sarawak have such impact. What about other domestic trade route? It means they are making huge sum of money with this route to the extent they are willing to resist any attempts to scrap this policy. What about Sabahan and Sarawakian then? Let us keep on suffering just so they can keep doing business?

Masa Chairman Nordin Mat Yusoff said if high shipping cost was the only reason, one could assume that when shipping cost declines, the prices of goods would likewise drop.

"But this has not been the case; total ocean freight rates declined by about 41 per cent in the last six months in Peninsular Malaysia-Sabah/Sarawak trade but this has not been reflected in the landed prices of consumer goods," he said in a statement.DE

Really? But it was just six month ago, one can't expect to feel immediate effect on the declined rate. It would take more than a year since the shipped goods would still be in the local market. No businessman would be stupid enough to drop their price of goods since most of the old stocks (which were shipped before the now declined rate) were probably not yet sold out.
However, Nordin said it is evident that the high prices of consumer goods have not been elastic and the cause for this must be investigated scientifically by relevant government agencies in the State, including the Domestic Trade Ministry and Mida. DE
Investigation again? How long will it take? Sabahan and Sarawakian have waited long enough. Even the Queen Elizabeth Hospital issue is still yet to be solve, let alone this huge issue involving all of West Malaysian.
He also said it was extremely misleading, and indeed callous, for anyone to suggest that shipping charges from Kota Kinabalu to Southampton as being twice that of similar charges from Port Klang to Southampton because of the cabotage policy.DE
Who said the price was being twice? But it's a fact that the price will be higher than what it was supposed to be since they ship it twice.
"In fact the argument against the cabotage policy cannot be more wrong because cabotage does not prevent any ship from calling between Kota Kinabalu and Southampton much as it does not between Port Klang and Southampton," he said. DE
Yes, but that applies only to Malaysian vessels that ship imported goods. Ships from Southampton (or any other part of the world) are permitted to sail to Sabah and Sarawak but not cargo ships. And how many Malaysian-flag ships that dock in Sabah and Sarawak are actually making a direct shipping route outside Malaysia? I can only think of MISC.
Alluding the furore to "barking up the wrong tree", he explained the removal or relaxation of the cabotage policy would in no way change this position because the question of shipping lines serving between KK and a foreign port would be influenced by, among other factors, volume of cargo, remoteness (geographical) of the market and port infrastructure and performance. DE
Yes, but the problem is, all the factors that influencing the price are done twice due to this policy. Why not shorten it into just once?
Urging the manufacturers and producers not to confuse the central issue, he said Masa was willing to sit down with relevant government agencies as well as manufacturers and producers in Sabah and Sarawak to help jointly identify and examine related costs in the transportation pipeline together with other players in the link. DE
Feeling the heat are we.. You guys better do it quickly and come out with an acceptable solution. If not, this cabotage policy between peninsula and Sabah & Sarawak must be scrap.

Kimanis-Bintulu....one way??

Guong

Pak Lah did it again. His flip-flop policy seems remain unchanged even though his days as PM almost over. In the recent 23rd PBS Annual Congress, he stunned everyone that the scrapped Kimanis-Bintulu Gas Pipeline project as demanded by Sabah is now ON again! He didn't even explain why it was on again.

UPKO leader Bernard G. Dompok was the most vocal on this matter. Or maybe the ONLY Sabahan leader that being vocal on this matter. What about the other Sabahan leader? Yet to hear any 'noise'.

Why must the gas be piped to Bintulu? Why must the government spend a huge sum of money just to build the pipeline to Bintulu when building Sabah's own gas refinery would be more practical and beneficial to Sabah. It's Sabah own resource we're talking about. It's not that we don't want to share but why not make Sabah as the main hub instead of Sarawak? I've got nothing against Sarawak but this is just so unfair.

With this resource, Sabah state can actually solve its 'blackout' problem. It can also create new job opportunity for the local. Most importantly, it can boost Sabah's economy development. It will provide a much more diverse opportunity to develop Sabah as a whole.

RM3 billion worth of 500km gas pipeline, why not just make one refinery in Sabah? Save more cost.

On May 31, Pak Lah assured Sabah leader in Kota Kinabalu that this project will be scrapped. So much for the assurance. But the worst part is, why are the other Sabah leaders seems to ignore this? Have they no 'balls' to say anything? Damn..

kick starting "Sabah Development Corridor"

Guong

Everyone knows about SDC. It was one of the development corridor projects that have been planned by the government before the 12th G.E. It was such a hype back then. To gain the rakyat vote, maybe?

But, that was then, what about the present? Where is SDC currently? In progress or....?
Recently, MP YB Datuk Ghapur raised this SDC issue in the parliament. He was asking for an explanation on why the SDC has yet to see any implementation even though it was launch last year. But, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Datuk Amirsham Aziz refuse to answer the question or maybe he actually doesn't even have any answer. I think you can guess what happen next in this session of parliament.

Our PM also made an announcement concerning these corridors project.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that the government will shelve some of the projects to weather the global economic slowdown, including those that are in the economic corridors. Malaysia Today
If you doesn't trust alternative media, click this link> Utusan

But then, Najib said that everything (development corridors project) was doing just fine. He was saying this in the recent launching of the Sabah International Expo in Kota Kinabalu. 1st article. 2nd article. In the 2nd article, this line caught my attention.

To kick start the SDC, the Federal Government allocated another RM5 billion to upgrade the state’s infrastructure.
Another RM5 billion and yet any progress on the SDC by our State Government? No wonder Datuk Ghapur raise this issue.

So, which is which? SDC was already launch since last year yet not a single 'sand' was moved in term of implementation. What is our CM doing since the SDC was supposed to be under his jurisdiction? Then Najib says everything is doing just fine but Pak Lah is going to review which project should be postpone or 'shelve'. Will it be SDC? Judging by the current world economy, the option wouldn't be good one.

To our leader, walk the talk please.

"State's success due to political stability: CM" ??

Guong

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said the development currently enjoyed by the people in Sabah is the result of political stability and continued economic growth. Daily Express, 12 October 2008

Have you read this in the news? What on earth was he talking about when mentioning Sabah's success? Didn't he know that Sabah is the worst when it comes to the rakyat well being? Didn't he know that we currently are the poorest state in Malaysia?

After reading the whole article (to read click.), he was actually talking about the future programs that have been planed to eradicate poverty in Sabah. What with the misleading title?

He pointed out that the State Government had outlined several programmes to eliminate hardcore poverty among the people. Daily Express, 12 October 2008

But this one just doesn't make sense

Musa also pointed out that Sabah was experiencing an upward economic trend, with more foreign investments pouring in to prompt more positive economic growth. Daily Express, 12 October 2008

Sabah "was" experiencing an upward economic trend? If we were, why did Sabah had the highest poverty level in Malaysia? Or maybe the reporter misquote him by using the word "was". But even if it was misquote, it still doesn't make sense since currently the world economy is in turmoil. How come Sabah experiencing an upward economic trend when the world economy is going downward? Who are these foreign investors that are pouring in to Sabah? Where do they come from? Does it benefit all Sabahan or just the cronies?

It doesn't need a genius to figure that out. Or maybe he thought that
Sabahan are unable to think.
