"Cheers for Sabah Workers"

Guong

After all the bad news on Sabah, at least there are some good one. (besides the reducing of petrol price)

Kota Kinabalu: Employees in Sabah are now entitled to more similar employment rights and benefits as those in West Malaysia, with the implementation of five new rules under the amended Sabah Labour Ordinance (Cap 67).

State Labour Department Director, Siti Aisyah Mohd Asri, said the five new rules under the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Cap 67) have been gazetted and enforced in the State effective May this year.

She said these new rules are:

- Labour (Limitation of Overtime Work) (Sabah) Rules 2008, which has scheduled the maximum amount of overtime work that can be done by the employee in any one month;

- Labour (Termination and Lay-Off Benefits) (Sabah) Rules 2008, which states the general provisions for the entitlement of employees to termination, lay-off and retrenchment benefits payment:

- Labour (Limitation of Powers of Officers) Rules 2008, which states the powers of officers under the Sabah Labour Ordinance (Cap 67);

- Labour (Payment Due to Deceased Employee)(Sabah) Rules 2008, payment that shall be payable by the employer to the next-of-kin on the death of an employee; and

- Labour (Contents of Contract) (Sabah) Rules 2008, which give a guideline on contents of service made by the employer and employee.read more..

But there's a problem, these rules only apply to those who are employed. The problem is Sabah has the highest unemployment rate in Malaysia. And some of these employees are not even Sabahan but from other states. I think it justified the news tittle ".... Sabah workers" not ".... Sabahan Workers".

Well, this good news doesn't seems to be a good news after all. For the unemployed, find a job or make one (entrepreneurship). but Legally la..
